Greetings from Roseann Stichnoth and Elizabeth Wahab, WLC Co-Chairs

We’re brimming with gratitude and inspiration! Thank you for joining us at our 10th Anniversary Power of Women to Make a Difference Award Luncheon.

By empowering each other, we raised nearly $1 million to support United Way of New York City’s (UWNYC) ReadNYC initiative to improve grade-level reading by third grade—a critical milestone in a child’s future success. What a monumental achievement!

In this WLC-Suite, enjoy reliving your favorite Luncheon moments, or if you missed it, catch up on the inspiring impact.

We hope you’ll continue to make a difference with us—attend one of our upcoming events and keep in the conversation online at @unitedwaynyc using #powerofwomen.

Whirring, buzzing, splashing! From social media, to radio, to print, and online, the Luncheon generated over 1.5 million media impressions. Highlights include:

Lights, camera, action! “It was a wonder moment, like I was wonderstruck!” exclaims Amy, a ReadNYC mom, when talking about her daughter Amaya’s academic progress in our newly released video, ReadNYC: See Our Impact, which premiered at the Luncheon.

In this video, see how ReadNYC profoundly affects the families and communities we serve by rallying the community behind the goal to improve reading proficiency and the belief that communities must wrap supports around whole families, not just the child, to succeed. Watch now!

Commemorate the Power of Women. While the Luncheon may be over, our chance to continue to make a difference is not. Inspired by the power of the Women’s Leadership Council (WLC), UWNYC has partnered with Lettrs—a social letter writing platform that incorporates engaging fonts, themes, and stamps.

A Power of Women stamp booklet is available through the app, featuring 15 Luncheon honorees, and a portion of the proceeds benefits ReadNYC. See more.

  • On March 16, Credit Agricole (CACIB) invited Sheena Wright, President and CEO, UWNYC and Kyung Yoon, UWNYC Board Member and Executive Director, Korean American Community Foundation, to speak to their employees and clients about gender diversity in the workplace. Wright and Yoon emphasized that women must build a resilient network of support along their paths. With a strong network, we “can unleash our collective power and passion for the City—it’s incredibly exciting,” said Yoon.

  • On March 31, the WLC enjoyed makeup tutorials, while perusing shoes and handbags to support ReadNYC at their Shop for a Cause event at Saks Fifth Avenue. ‪Saks‬ donated 10% of every purchase to ‪‎ReadNYC‬.

  • April 7–8, UWNYC hosted the first-ever Women’s Leadership Council Northeast Regional Meeting. Forty women from United Ways and Women’s Leadership Councils across the United Way network gathered to share best practices, explore opportunities, review challenges, and set goals, building a stronger, more empowered network.

Step Aside Michelin, Initiative Earns Pacesetter Honor

I Love ReadNYC

Three cheers for our ReadNYC initiative! In March, the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (CGLR)—a collaboration that’s working to increase reading skills among kids from low-income families—announced their 4th Annual Pacesetter honorees.

And for the second year in a row, ReadNYC is a pacesetting superstar. The initiative’s work in New York City is one of the 38 CGLR communities—out of more than 240 communities nationwide—being recognized this year for leading by example.

Our ReadNYC team received their formal honor in Washington, D.C., while attending the CGLR’s Funder-to-Funder Huddle earlier this month. The Huddle gives CGLR participants the opportunity to meet funders and share challenges, wins, and best practices. Learn more.
